COSHH
COSHH is an abbreviation for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.
When employees are exposed to using hazardous chemicals and substances in the workplace, there are a number of inherent health risks. These can range from being minor illnesses to much more serious diseases such as cancer.
The COSHH regulations that are imposed upon businesses require that they take measures to ensure employee's health is not affected by working with such hazardous materials.
The law constitutes hazardous materials as being anything that can damage a workers health including chemicals, vapours, gases, fumes, dusts, biological agents and germs, amongst others.
The law that requires employers to reduce exposure to chemicals and hazardous materials suggests this can be done in a number of ways. Some of them are briefly outlined below:
- Determine what the hazards to health are and where they exist
- Perform a risk assessment to discover how to eliminate harm
- Introduce measures that reduce hazards
- Ensuring all employees abide by rules and are using the preventative measures
- Monitor anti-hazard measures to ensure they are effective and working correctly
