The role of an Engineering Manager, Food
The Food Engineering Manager will in most cases be responsible
for all engineering issues within the food manufacturing or
processing facility. This can include planned preventative
maintenance, small projects, food manufacturing process
enhancement. They are likely to be accountable for food production
engineering and maintenance management; their remit is largely in
food organisations' to deliver a competitive advantage.
The Engineering Manager will be expected to provide direction to
develop proactive and responsive maintenance programmes, and
capital project teams, and will participate and contribute in
business development initiatives.
The Engineering Manager in a food manufacturer will be expected to
consistently add value to the total operation, working
cross-functionally rather than as purely a support function.
The Engineering Manager in a food business will be given accountability for managing a team of staff. They may have experience of refrigeration, pneumatics and electrical engineering and as a result they recognize that working as a food Engineering Manager is most often a hands on role. They will in some cases be responsible for the installing and maintenance of new equipment and machinery, as well as the management of the existing equipment.
The typical Engineering Manager would be in control of all ongoing maintenance, implementation of new lines/systems and research/identification of cutting edge equipment. Many Engineering Managers operating in the food and drink industry will have a large understanding of World Class Manufacturing and be able to dominate the role and prosper within the food business.
An Engineering Manager in the food manufacturing industry may have experience of best practice engineering TPM / RCM / FMECA and be skilled with PM systems. They should have the ability to develop the trust and confidence of peers and senior managers.
The Food Engineering Manager will typically manage large projects, ensuring budgetary control and effective management of external suppliers is carried out throughout the business. This will include organising and controlling all planned maintenance activity, managing the repairs and maintenance budget and taking responsibility for asset care across the site so that full production can be sustained to maximum capacity. As the Engineering Manager, you will recognise the value in embracing modern maintenance techniques and computerised maintenance systems.
