North East Lincolnshire is best known for its sea fishing industry, which once gave the area much of its wealth. In the 1950s, Grimsby was the largest fishing port in the world and is still one of the largest fish processing centres in Europe.

One of the largest food production companies in Grimsby is the Findus Group, whose Young's Seafood brand are the market leader in frozen fish with over £300m in turnover. Their products include battered fish, fish fillets and prawns. They have won several awards because of their policy on responsibly sourcing seafood, including the Seafish Award for Outstanding Achievement and a Major Commendation in the Business Commitment to the Environment Awards. As well as major food production facilities, the area has a wealth of traditional food producers such as Alfred Enderby's smokehouse, who is one of Rick Stein's "food heroes". Fish has been smoked here for almost 100 years and the method has been refined over time to produce fish with the best natural flavour. In recognition of the unique skill involved, they have earned a Protected Geographical Indication from the European Union for their specialist Grimsby Traditional Smoked Fish.
