Food Businesses in the South West
The South West is well known for its production of Cheddar Cheese, Cornish Pasties, and traditional English Cider. Cheddar cheese originates from Cheddar Gorge where the caves provided the perfect environment for maturing cheese. This popular cheese is produced all over the world but in Somerset it is still produced using milk from local dairy herds. As well as smaller farm production the area is also home to larger dairy food companies such as Dairy Crest. With production facilities in Davidstow and Frome this company produces a wide range of dairy foods including Cathedral City Cheddar, Clover and Country Life. The facility at Davidstow has a capacity of 55,000 tonnes of cheese, supplied by 500 local farms. There are opportunities for Purchasing, Human Resources and Food Technology roles.
Large number of cider producers in Somerset, from small farm producers such as The Orchard Pig and Bridge Farm to some of the most advanced cider production facilities at Thatchers in Somerset with the opportunity for Sales, Manufacturing and Finance.
Restaurants
Devon is home to Michael Caines' two Michelin starred restaurant at Gidleigh Park as well his gourmet restaurant, Abode in Exeter. These highly individual establishments offer the finest ingredients from the South West and have won huge acclaim from industry critics.
Further down the coast, Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall serves locally caught fish and has become something of a national institution. It has recently benefitted from a £2.5 million refit and would be ideal for any ambitious chefs or graduates.
