Yorkshire has a long history of prominent food companies. It is home to two of the major supermarkets in the UK, Asda whose head office is in Leeds and Morrisons, which was founded in Bradford. Leeds was also the birthplace of Marks and Spencer which started out as a penny bazaar in Kirkgate market.

The Food and Drink Industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the UK.

About 55,000 people are employed in the food and drink sector in Yorkshire, with a turnover of over £8bn.

Last year, The Office for National Statistics demonstrated that the UK food and drink industry was the only sector to increase production, and that it has consistently maintained a stable level over the last two years.
