For Product Development Chefs these are often the two leading retail accounts that you want to work on - premium end of the market, loads of regular NPD activity, and customers with a real passion for food. Both these roles are customer facing appointments so there will be the opportunity to work in partnership with retail product developers, buyers and technologists - plus of course the kudos of seeing your new dishes in store, and possibly featured in magazines or TV advertising. So what is needed? This client sets very high standards for its Development Chefs, so you need to have a strong and well developed culinary ability, gained in a top notch establishment (Michelin star or AA rosette). Alternatively, you will already have been working in a food manufacturing business renowned for its product standards and innovation. Awareness of food trends, the ability to present products in a formal review situation, cross-functional working with technical, production and purchasing colleagues - all these are required to be a success. And if you do succeed, then the rewards and recognition are great. Being able to stand in a large M&S or Waitrose store on a busy Saturday and see your new range selling really well is a fantastic buzz, and realising that the next new big range launch is down to you!
