Food production requires a broad spectrum of roles, from supply chain through manufacture to planning and sales. The area of production itself takes raw materials and processes and packages them for human consumption. This includes baking bread, creating tinned soup and making tea bags.

Each food type requires specialist knowledge not just in producing the finished food product but also in packaging, storage and distribution. The scale of food production can vary from large-scale mass produced items to smaller hand made items. An example of large scale production is the Swizzels Matlow confectionery factory in Derbyshire which takes a delivery of 20 tons of sugar every day and produces over a billion sweets every year. The plant produces the confectionery from raw materials, sorts it, packages it and then delivers the finished product to distributors and retailers. New products are regularly developed, as innovation is vital in maintaining a high profile on the market. Development chefs are required in many food production companies to create new ranges and flavours across a wide section of food types.

Food technologists are vital in the food and drink industry not just to develop new product but also to ensure food safety. Processes such as milk pasteurisation are constantly being developed to prolong the shelf life of perishable foods. This has a direct impact on the geographical reach of products and as such increases potential markets. New types of packaging are also required to improve both shelf life and also as a tool to help promote and sell product.
