Food Technical Jobs

The technical side of the food and drink industry has been an important aspect since the nineteenth century when the canning process was invented.

There have been many developments since then including pasteurisation, freeze-drying and refrigeration. These processes are primarily associated with food safety and preservation although food technology encompasses a wider spectrum of disciplines including new product development and packaging.

There are several different methods of preserving food including refrigeration, freeze-drying, vacuum packing and the addition of artificial additives. These methods help to keep foods fresher for longer and to maintain their flavour by reducing the oxidisation of fats and preventing the growth of bacteria. As new methods of preservation are employed in the industry, different types of packaging must be developed.

Improvements in food preservation, packaging and process optimisation allow food producers to reach a bigger market and also allow retailers to reduce spoilage. Many food companies invest in researching food technologies to enable them to lead the market with new innovations. New strains of fruit, wheat and other raw materials have traditionally improved yield and flavour.
