Food Technology is an extremely important division of the food and drink industry. It has a direct influence on all aspects of food processing, including selection, preservation, packaging, distribution and marketing.

One of the many sectors within Food Technology is Food Microbiology which involves the study of the microbiological makeup of food. This can be applied in areas such as extending the shelf life of products and improving the safety and quality control of food.

Several large food organisations like Nestle or Premier Foods offer graduate recruitment programmes that allow students to progress from their area of study into an industrial environment. Programmes like these allow people to experience different areas within the industry. It is quite common to change from one discipline to another as someone discovers their strengths through exposure to different tasks. A graduate in microbiology may progress from food production and development through to Marketing and Sales or Distribution.
