Graduate Engineering Jobs

Food Engineering covers a wide range of disciplines within the Food and Drink industry, from ingredient manufacture to packaging.

Food production companies are always striving for innovation in order to stay ahead in their particular field. For example Carlsberg have recently developed a new strain of barley that will mean their beer will remain fresher for longer and will therefore increase its storage life. It was developed using traditional cross-pollination techniques in their research centre rather than genetic modification, which has met with a degree of mistrust with consumers. Its increased disease resistance also means it requires fewer pesticides. The new barley has 10 different varieties, each suited to different climates and growing conditions in different parts of the world.

As well as the development of new food and drink products, the equipment used in transport and storage of food is constantly being updated as new technologies emerge. Bottle coolers are essential equipment in restaurants and bars, and Lec have developed a wide variety that incorporates the latest technology. They have been designed to run extremely efficiently, allowing lower energy consumption for reduced running costs. Other innovative features include an external temperature display and enforced air-cooling when the door is opened.

Graduates of microbiology, agriculture and chemical engineering can find opportunities in research and development of new food products and equipment.
