HSE
HSE is at abbreviation for the health and safety watchdog, the Health and Safety Executive. They act in the best interests of the public to reduce health and safety risks, injury, and death in workplaces across the United Kingdom.
Due to the involvement of the HSE in the food and drink manufacturing industry, the industry as a whole has seen massive reduction in the number of injuries in the workplace. These workplaces can range from meat processing plants to slaughterhouses and from pizza making factories to flourmills.
The introduction of a safety initiative by the HSE has reduced the injury rate in food and drink manufacturers by 50% over the last 20 years.
Despite these massive and impressive reductions, over 25% of all injuries in the manufacturing sector occur in the food and drink manufacturing industry - whilst this statistics shows a fairly large percentage, it is important to remember that the food and drink industry is the largest manufacturing industry in the whole of the UK manufacturing sector, so a percentage such as this one may only be relative to the industry's sheer size.
Within the food and drink industry, the largest number of injuries comes from either an employee slipping on wet flooring, falling from substantial height, or from working with food processing or packing machinery.
Some will use the abbreviation for Health, Safety and Environment, although the correct abbreviation for this is SHE.
