Jobs In Food
The Food and Drink Industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the UK.
About 400,000 people are employed in the food and drink sector with an additional million in agricultural and ancillary services that are directly linked in the supply chain.
In order to safely transfer the raw materials from their agricultural source to manufacturer to retail outlets and restaurants, an array of distributors, testers, managers and HR personnel are required. As well as the existing supply chain infrastructure, food companies rely on innovation in food products and packaging. Development chefs are constantly working on new blends and flavours, from pomegranate yoghurt to Caribbean Lamb pasties. Other areas of new product development include packaging for food and drink that can help the shelf life of fast moving consumer goods.
Last year, The Office for National Statistics demonstrated that the UK food and drink industry was the only sector to increase production, and that it has consistently maintained a stable level over the last two years.
