What is a KPI?

A KPI or Key Performance Indicator is a term used across businesses and entities for measuring performance.

KPI's are generally used as a measure of success in various areas of business. KPI's can be used to monitor performance of a whole business and also of the individual employees within it.

KPI's are often monitored on a daily, weekly or monthly basis to determine progress that has been made towards a specific aim or long-term goal. In other scenarios, KPI's can be used to monitor operational procedures - such as 100% customer satisfaction.

To determine the KPI's that a business will use, employees need to understand fully what the business sees as important or 'key' to success. KPI's will differ across departments within a business - Sales Reps will have different KPI's than the Customer Service department, so it is important to understand what the key tasks are for each department.

KPI assessment is often linked to performance reward management - employees who continuously satisfy the KPI criteria can be rewarded in one way or another, whilst those who don't meet the KPI's can either be coached, disciplined - at the very lest, KPI's that are not met highlight areas for improvement or suggest that the criteria may be too strict or ambitious.
