Waitrose supermarket to create 600 jobs

2011-03-31T00:00:00

31 March 2011

Amongst the rather common bad news that redundancies will be taking place at food businesses across the UK, all hope is not lost, as illustrated Waitrose and their plans to open a new logistics and distribution depot in Chorley, Lancashire.

Waitrose, the premium supermarket chain, is investing heavily in creating a greater presence in the North West region of the UK. This distribution depot is the first sign of many in the pipeline that plan to see the retailer strengthen its brand and competitive position in the food retail sector.

The investment of £35m has been announced to provide service to 80 branches that already exist across the North West and in Scotland.

The new depot, if given the all clear by Chorley council, will be opened in Autumn 2012 with recruitment beginning in Spring 2012.

Waitrose are keen to state that they have nothing to hide and are simply making efforts to create a wider presence in the North West region. The retail store has set goals of doubling its number of stores - whether they be full size supermarkets or small grocery/convenience stores - across the UK to back its growth initiatives.

Chorley council have welcomed the plans to build the new distribution centre, and are jumping at the sign of a substantial number of new jobs to the area.
