Search Engines

'Search Engines' is a term that is used to describe a business that has developed algorithms to search the Internet for websites and web pages linked to a user specified query, and then list them in 'relevance' order.

The main search engines in the UK are Google, Yahoo! and Bing. The most commonly used search engine is Google, who have invested heavily in marketing their engine, which contributed to their success.

Google's success can be seen in the use of their name. Instead of using the term 'search engine' when talking amongst peers, many of us use the term 'Google' instead. This is a similar marketing strategy to that of Hoover's, who found many of their users using term 'Hoover' instead of 'vacuum cleaner'. It is an effective marketing strategy and has almost certainly contributed to Google's dominance in the UK market.
