Social Media

Social Media is a term that has been around for a good few years now. It refers to the social platforms that many of us use on a daily base, similar to the collective term 'Social Networks'.

The earlier social networks include MySpace and Bebo - these are still around today, but have been overtaken by the giant networks Facebook and Twitter. On the business side, you will find LinkedIn and Xing for business professionals to network and link in with colleagues.

Below is a brief introduction to the two largest social networks:

Twitter is a micro blogging website. Your 'tweets' are limited to 140 characters. You follow people to receive updates from them, and they follow you to receive your updates. Many tweeters will send links to their followers or to individuals across the twitter platform. Due to the character limit, it is often the case that a URL shortener will be used to reduce the length of the URL.

Facebook is the largest social networking platform in the world. It has more than 500 million active users. You connect with friends so that you can see their posts, photos, videos, updates etc.
