Supermarkets

Supermarkets are a type of grocery store, but one that has developed from the traditional smaller stores that existed previously.

They are self-service stores that offer a wide range of household products - food and drink, clothing, toiletries, and ornaments… the list is endless. Supermarkets also sell convenience products to attract quick shoppers and passers-by.

In the UK, the supermarket industry is highly competitive. The 'big four' is a term that is often used and refers to Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, although some now use the term 'big five' and include the more recent Waitrose.

Each supermarket has it's own selling point, aiming to differentiate itself from its competitors. According to the 'supermarket sweep' that is run in every issue of the Grocer, Asda is the cheapest supermarket to shop at (often only by a few pence, but it usually comes out on top). Morrisons put emphasis on their fresh bakery, butcher and fishmonger sections, which are seen as being superior to the other supermarkets. Waitrose stocks more premium lines than the other retailers, so is considered a more expensive and more premium supermarket.
